Trailer for Emma Donoghue's 'The Room'

A teaser trailer has been released for The Room, which is inspired by the real-life crimes of Austrian Josef Fritzl.

Director Lenny Abrahamson's new film is based on Irish writer Emma Donoghue's novel and screenplay.

The story is told from the perspective of a five-year-old boy who has grown up with his mother in a shed which he believes is the whole world, while she hides from him the fact that they are captive.
To five-year-old-Jack, Room is the world. It’s where he was born, and where he and his Ma eat and sleep and play and learn. But to Ma, it’s the prison where she’s been held for seven long years, since Old Nick abducted her when she was nineteen.
Through her fierce love for her son, Ma has created a life for him in that eleven- by-eleven-foot space. But Jack’s curiosity is building alongside her own desperation—and she knows that Room cannot contain either indefinitely.
The cast is led by Brie Larson, Jacob Tremblay, Joan Allen and William H. Macy. The film's US release is on 16 October, with Canada a week later. It will be in Irish cinemas on 29 January 2016.

Abrahamson is widely regarded as one of Ireland's most exciting directors today. His films include Adam and Paul, Garage, What Richard Did and Frank.

Donoghue's latest novel, Frog Music (2014), is a murder mystery set in San Francisco in 1876. Room (2010), her Man-Booker-shortlisted seventh novel, has now sold well over two million copies.
