Lehane and Banville on crime fiction

Declan Burke interviews Irish-American writer Dennis Lehane in the Irish Examiner this week about adapting Love/Hate for a US audience, and reviews his latest novel World Gone By in this morning's Irish Times.

For another taster before Lehane's public appearances in Ireland later this month, here's an extended interview we've come across. It was filmed on the roof of Lehane's Boston home.

It's from the "Irish Writers in America" series by the City University of New York's television station.

The same episode from November 2013 features John Banville (at 13:40) talking about his Benjamin Black crime fiction series and the contrast with his novels written under the Banville name.

Dublin writers' festival

Both Banville and Lehane will be appearing in events around this year's International Literature Festival Dublin, which began this week.

Banville will be one of the "book doctors" recommending books to read, in a charity event on Saturday 23 May at 3pm in Books Upstairs (the same day at 4pm Eoin McNamee will be a book doctor at Dubray Books in Grafton Street). All proceeds go to the charity Alone.

Lehane will be in conversation with writer and playwright Declan Hughes at the Irish Writers Centre in Dublin on 28 May at 7.30pm, and will be interviewed by journalist Jim Carroll at Listowel Writers' Week in Kerry the following evening at the same time.
